Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Cuentos de la Selva' features the dioramas created by artist Antonio Santos for the book of the same title, which won the Ministry of Culture's Award for Best Edited Book in 2018. In parallel with Horacio Quiroga's original narrative, Antonio Santos constructs a jungle world through his dioramas, which are reliefs made by superimposing painted cardboard planes. A total of thirty-three scenes represent the diverse ecosystem of the planet's jungles, transporting visitors into a shadowy world where they may feel unsafe, briefly experiencing the wildest nature. Antonio Santos (Huesca, 1955) was inspired by childhood visits to the Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, where the dioramas fascinated him with their ability to bring animals to life. This fascination with representing and explaining reality has remained a core part of his artistic practice. Santos is an illustrator, writer, sculptor, and painter who studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona. He has held over sixty solo exhibitions and has focused on book illustration for the past thirteen years, publishing fifty titles. His work has been recognized with the Daniel Gil Award for Best Children's Book in 2003 and the Second National Illustration Award in 2004.
