Curatorial context

Museo ABC presents 'Doña Emilia ilustrada. Personajes de cuentos en la Colección ABC', a scenographic exhibition that brings to life dozens of stories written by Emilia Pardo Bazán through the characters who starred in them. This exhibition serves to inaugurate the new Cultural Center named after the writer in Madrid's Salamanca District. Emilia Pardo Bazán was a prolific author, writing over six hundred short stories published in various magazines and newspapers, notably Blanco y Negro. Her literary output spanned novels, poetry, travelogues, biographies, and critical essays, exploring themes of love, terror, history, social issues, and her native Galicia, often infused with religion, fantasy, and superstition. The characters featured in this exhibition, drawn from illustrations in the Blanco y Negro magazine between 1896 and 1921, offer a vivid portrayal of late 19th and early 20th-century Spanish society, its social classes, virtues, vices, political ideas, passions, beliefs, and superstitions, with a focus on both rural Galicia and the developing urban landscape. The exhibition highlights the illustrations, with Narciso Méndez Bringa being a prominent illustrator of Doña Emilia's tales in Blanco y Negro, known for his precise and detailed style. Other notable illustrators whose work accompanies Pardo Bazán's texts, such as Santiago Regidor, Ángel Díaz Huertas, and others, are also represented. All reproduced images are derived from original drawings preserved within the ABC Collection. The exhibition celebrates Pardo Bazán's significant literary legacy, her role as an introducer of naturalism in Spain, and her evolution towards symbolism and spiritualism.
