Estefanía Martín Sáenz's exhibition 'Lujo y Luto' (Luxury and Mourning) explores themes of decay and death through diverse artistic mediums including embroidery, print, and animation. The exhibition features contemporary works alongside a Juan de Arellano still life and a historical cover, with elements that physically change over time.
The exhibition 'Lujo y Luto' (Luxury and Mourning) by Estefanía Martín Sáenz, presented as part of the 'Conexiones' program, is an exploration of contemporary artistic expressions of decadence and death. Martín Sáenz, known for her exquisite use of materials and decorative rhythm, primarily works with manual and mechanical embroidery, drawings, and prints. This exhibition features two large canvases developed with her characteristic fabric printing technique, complemented by smaller, delicate pieces. A notable element is the inclusion of a Juan de Arellano still life from the Banco Santander Collection and a cover for 'Blanco y Negro' by Manuel Escudero from the ABC Collection, serving as inspiration. The exhibition also incorporates fresh floral compositions that will wilt over time, symbolizing the passage of life and the inevitability of death, as well as a semicircular curtain and an animated video that further emphasize these themes.
The 'Conexiones' program, a seven-year initiative by Museo ABC and Fundación Banco Santander, supports contemporary art by inviting an artist to create an exhibition project based on two selected works from their respective collections. For this XV edition, Martín Sáenz's unique plastic universe, which is predominantly feminine, uses these historical pieces as a starting point to develop her characteristic treatment of fabric, form, and decorative rhythm, offering a nuanced perspective on luxury and mourning.
