Curatorial context

The Fundación Colección ABC and Fundación Unicaja present '(Breve) Historia de la Gente,' an exhibition featuring 250 original drawings by the acclaimed Spanish artist Antonio Mingote (1919–2012). The exhibition focuses on 'Historia de la Gente,' considered by many to be Mingote's masterpiece, originally published in 'Los Domingos de ABC' between 1980 and 1983. Mingote intended this work to comment on contemporary society, building upon his earlier publications and using historical context as a pretext to discuss human behavior, 'their capacity for great heroism and enormous foolishness.' The 250 drawings selected for this exhibition, created between 1980 and 1983, utilize Mingote's signature techniques of ink and watercolor, with occasional use of graphite, pen, or gouache on paper or cardboard. The texts displayed throughout the exhibition are drawn from Mingote's original writings for the series, maintaining his characteristic wit and critical observation. The exhibition highlights universal themes that permeated Mingote's oeuvre, including human conflict, poverty, environmental conservation, art, education, and the enjoyment of life, all presented with his characteristic humor and insight. Mingote, a celebrated intellectual and master of graphic humor, dedicated 59 years to 'ABC,' making 'people' his enduring subject.
