Curatorial context

Ana Bustelo's exhibition, 'Piedra, Papel, Amuleto,' presents a comprehensive look at her artistic practice from 2018 to 2025. The show, located on the 0 floor of the Clara del Rey Cultural Center – Museo ABC, brings together five distinct projects: 'Megaestructuras,' 'Banquete,' 'Amuleto,' 'Memoria,' and 'Roma.' Through these works, Bustelo utilizes drawing as her primary means of engaging with and understanding the world, generating a rich repertoire of images, figures, and fanzines. Her approach is characterized by a continuous re-evaluation of images, where modifications alter not just their physical form but also their significance, inviting a fluid interpretation. Bustelo, who is also an illustrator and editor, employs the 'visual grammar of design' to analyze forms, compose images, and construct narratives, with line, color, textures, and materials serving as key elements in her formal investigations. She explains the world through a measured logic, where each element forms part of a personal graphic alphabet. The drawings relate to each other and the space, as well as intimately with the viewer, with voids and silences playing a crucial role. Her work features a playful use of deception through the accumulation of objects and forms, creating trompe-l'oeil effects that gain meaning through composition, color, and texture. The folds of paper break bidimensionality, and figures distort as if in memory, urging interpretation. This spiritual character of her work fosters introspection and a sense of transition, culminating in images that serve as totems for memory and remembrance.
