This exhibition showcases the work of Spanish illustrators who have achieved international success in the American comic book industry, particularly with Marvel Comics and DC Comics. It highlights their contributions to iconic superhero characters and explores their careers across different generations.
The exhibition 'Superhéroes con Ñ. Los dibujantes españoles que triunfan en Estados Unidos' celebrates the often-unsung contributions of Spanish illustrators to the global comic book industry, specifically within the American market. Since the 1990s, multiple generations of Spanish artists have lent their talents to major publishers like Marvel Comics and DC Comics, bringing iconic characters such as Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, and Wonder Woman to life.
The exhibition is structured chronologically and generationally, beginning with 'The Pioneers' who forged paths into the US market without established channels. It then moves through 'The Great Landing' of the mid-nineties, the 'Labyrinth Generation' (named after a Spanish comic imprint), and 'Represented, Iconoclasts and Outsiders' for more recent artists entering the superhero genre. 'On the Margins' features related artists whose work touches upon the exhibition's themes. Visitors can expect to see original drawings from artists like Rafael López Espí, Carlos Pacheco, Ramón F. Bachs, David Aja, Pepe Larraz, Enrique Vegas, and an unpublished project by Paco Roca for Marvel Comics. The exhibition also includes a selection of 15 essential Spanish-authored comics and five exhibition-produced videos exploring topics from comic reading to artist representation.
