This exhibition presents 'Tambores en la batalla,' an illustrated chronicle of World War I through 75 humorous vignettes by Sileno. The works, originally published in ABC and Blanco y Negro, are displayed alongside complementary pieces from the Museo de Pontevedra Collection, offering a unique perspective on the conflict's major events.
The exhibition 'Tambores en la batalla. Crónica ilustrada de la I Guerra Mundial' features a collection of 75 humorous vignettes by Pedro Antonio Villahermosa y Borao, known by his pseudonym Sileno. These illustrations, originally published in publications like ABC and Blanco y Negro between 1914 and 1918, capture the major events of World War I from a Spanish perspective. Sileno, a prominent political cartoonist and master of Spanish illustration, depicted events such as the Battle of Verdun, the Gallipoli landings, the use of zeppelins, naval warfare, the entry of the United States, and the Russian Revolution, all while maintaining Spain's neutrality.
The exhibition, hosted at the Museo de Pontevedra, aims to commemorate the centenary of the armistice and offers a unique visual narrative of the Great War. Each displayed cartoon is presented with its original publication context and a concise historical reference, allowing visitors to understand the events through Sileno's masterful and often satirical drawings. The exhibition also includes works from the Museo de Pontevedra Collection that further enhance the homage to the Great War.
