This exhibition at the ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration explores the origins of the ABC Collection, starting with its founder Torcuato Luca de Tena. It showcases the significance of art and illustration in his editorial projects and traces the history of the collection through various artistic trends reflected in the press over the decades.
The ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration presents 'Un rato con Torcuato. El origen de una colección,' an exhibition delving into the foundational aspects of the ABC Collection. Beginning with Torcuato Luca de Tena, the founder of 'Blanco y Negro' and 'ABC,' the exhibition highlights his commitment to art and illustration within his business and editorial endeavors. The exhibition is divided into five sections: “La información ilustrada,” “A todo color,” “Siempre a la última,” “El drama humano,” and “Reír por no llorar.” Through 29 original works and digital displays featuring photographs and additional illustrations, it narrates the history of the ABC Collection, which began forming in 1891 with the creation of the illustrated magazine 'Blanco y Negro' by Torcuato Luca de Tena.
The exhibition further illustrates the introduction of color in the press, the evolving artistic trends reflected in Prensa Española's illustrations throughout the decades, and how illustrated press served as a medium to document societal history, particularly through graphic humor. This rich past has culminated in the ABC Collection, comprising over 150,000 original pieces now safeguarded and exhibited by the Museo ABC. As a final touch, visitors can view historical objects from 'Blanco y Negro' and 'ABC,' such as antique cameras, reproduction plates, and movable type, offering a glimpse into the production processes of the past century.
