Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the aesthetic topography of Dimitris Pikionis, a key figure in 20th-century Greek culture. It showcases six of his architectural works through images, drawings, and plans, interspersed with his own writings, focusing on his influential project for the Acropolis of Athens.

Curatorial context

Dimitris Pikionis (1887-1968) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Greek culture, whose architectural work synthesized tradition with modern abstraction. Having studied in Munich and Paris, he was influenced by modern painting and sculpture, yet upon returning to Greece, he dedicated himself to an architecture that integrated Hellenic identity with Western, Eastern, and Byzantine influences. This exhibition delves into Pikionis's creative process through six significant architectural projects, presented via images, drawings, and plans. Visitors will be guided by the architect's own words, thoughts, and autobiographical notes. A central focus is his most important project: the landscape treatment of the access routes to the Acropolis of Athens, a design rich with pictorial references in its paving, exemplifying what can be termed an 'aesthetic topography'. The exhibition also highlights related lectures that explore various facets of Pikionis's work, including tradition, landscape, and his synthesis of Eastern and Western aesthetics.
