Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Max Ernst. Surrealismo. Arte y cine' offers a unique journey through the life and trajectory of Max Ernst, combining pieces across different supports: paintings, sculptures, collages, frottages, illustrated books, and photographs, all selected for their connections with cinema. This presents an innovative and unprecedented approach to the work of the renowned German surrealist artist. Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a painter, sculptor, draftsman, graphic artist, and poet, whose work is described as kaleidoscopic, multifaceted, and inimitable. For the first time, through specific research, this exhibition highlights the artist's relationship with film. Cinema served as a parallel and ever-present avenue throughout Ernst's life and career; his work significantly inspired surrealist cinema and subsequent filmmakers, while Ernst himself acted in films, served on film juries, and designed film awards. His life has also been the subject of numerous films and documentaries, revealing a constant, mutual exchange between his artistic practice and cinema. Film fragments and immersive projections dialogue dynamically with the artworks, set within an exhibition design that immerses visitors in the singular, adventurous, and restless life of the artist, connecting his work to progressive themes such as exile, transcultural issues, and environmental concerns.
