Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases the work of Lotty Rosenfeld, a key figure in Latin American video art. It explores her politically charged and unclassifiable work, which bridges her activism against state violence with a conception of images as spaces for freedom and transformation.

Curatorial context

Figure key to Latin American video art, Lotty Rosenfeld (Santiago de Chile, 1943-2020) created an unclassifiable body of work rooted in her political struggle against state violence and her vision of images as essential spaces for freedom and present-day transformation. During a period of dictatorship when public demonstrations and filming were forbidden, her work emerged through public interventions that challenged the silencing imposed by the political-military power, while also calling the community to imagine new forms of collective participation. The impact of these early gestures marked her entire subsequent oeuvre, as she continued to delve into the most conflictive aspects of neoliberal policies. One of the vital centers of her artistic practice was to place herself, her body, in spaces where she was not expected. More specifically, to highlight those signs whose power to organize life had become so naturalized as to be invisible to critical questioning. From these precisely chosen points, Rosenfeld intervened, generating waves of interference through her actions and the movement of her images, whose effects were, and continue to be, fundamental. The stock market, cross-border spaces, pawn shops, and centers of maximum institutional power were some of the locations where she decided to work to question the logics and mechanisms by which social inequality, exclusion, and the normativity of conduct or gender are established. In this sense, her audiovisual work, characterized by a radical interweaving of materials, languages, and archives, operates as an authentic bypass, opening a possibility where life and its imaginative forces have become obstructed.
