Curatorial context

Marking the centenary of the Círculo de Bellas Artes' building, projected by Antonio Palacios and finished in 1926, this exhibition offers a comprehensive exploration of the origin, design, and construction of one of Madrid's most emblematic architectural achievements on Gran Vía. For a century, this building has been a pivotal point for the city's cultural life, witnessing urban, social, and artistic shifts, and remaining a recognizable icon. The exhibition features a curated selection of historical documents and materials from the 1919 competition for the Círculo's new headquarters, including original plans, preparatory drawings, period photographs, and previously unseen pieces that precisely reconstruct the building's conception and execution. These materials shed light on the project's technical complexity and the aesthetic and cultural aspirations of Palacios and the institution. The exhibition delves into characteristic aspects of the building, such as its innovative spatial and structural solutions, its monumental volumes, and its carefully integrated ornamental elements that define its urban presence. Visitors can observe how Palacios blended classical architectural languages with early 20th-century metropolitan trends, contributing to Gran Vía's identity as a modern city axis. Beyond its architectural heritage, the building is presented as a living space that has fostered cultural evolution in Spain, with its halls and studios hosting generations of artists, writers, filmmakers, thinkers, and diverse audiences, making it a vital hub for creation and cultural experience. On its centennial, the Círculo de Bellas Artes building stands not just as an architectural reference but as a symbol of modernity, culture, and urban life in the heart of Madrid.
