It features interventions by various artists and aims to uncover hidden histories within the institution.

Curatorial context

La lechuza de Minerva, launched to coincide with the centenary of the Círculo de Bellas Artes building, is a critical reflection on the institution's role and the power of art in contemporary life. Drawing inspiration from the insurgent spirit of the 1991 exhibition 'El sueño imperativo', which transformed the Círculo into a space of political and poetic friction, this exhibition seeks to activate a disruptive energy from the present. It convenes artists, activists, and collectives whose practices often inhabit the liminal spaces between body and architecture, writing and space, matter and memory. The intervention unfolds over two months, activating less visible areas of the building and its programming, functioning as interferences and fissures that open new modes of listening and presence. It is conceived as a device in process, open to instability and resistance to fixed definition, aiming to spill out beyond the building and into the city's pulse. A significant aspect of the exhibition is its endeavor to uncover a hidden part of the building's history: the recovery of 'Sky Goddess, Minerva' (1991), an artwork created by Nancy Spero for 'El sueño imperativo' on the Círculo's rooftop. This material archaeology and field research, undertaken by restorer Rocío Casasus, seeks not only to reconstruct an artistic gesture but also to reactivate critical memory and question its restitution in the present. The exhibition prompts urgent questions about the institutions we need today, the bodies that can inhabit them, and the frictions that allow for their re-imagination, envisioning a porous institution that listens, is affected, and is open to the unexpected and more just ways of being together.
