Curatorial context

This exhibition at Círculo de Bellas Artes, in collaboration with Sold Out, offers the most extensive retrospective in Spain dedicated to Robert Capa, a pivotal figure in 20th-century photography. The display comprises over 250 items, sourced from the Golda Darty Collection and Magnum Photos archives, encompassing original period photographs, international press publications, and personal artifacts. Robert Capa's career, though tragically short, defined modern photojournalism. He covered five major conflicts—the Spanish Civil War, the Sino-Japanese War, World War II, the first Arab-Israeli War, and the Indochina War—always seeking to be at the heart of the action. His iconic images, such as 'The Falling Soldier' from the Spanish Civil War and his D-Day photographs from Omaha Beach, have become ingrained in collective memory. The exhibition highlights his close professional and personal partnership with Gerda Taro, with whom he shared the 'Robert Capa' byline during the Spanish Civil War. Beyond his war photography, Capa also documented cultural figures like Picasso, Hemingway, and Ingrid Bergman, and explored genres like fashion, cinema, and travel photography, including experiments with color. The display includes original prints developed in his time, preserving their immediacy and period marks, alongside personal objects like his Leica camera and typewriter, revealing his vibrant personality and diverse interests. This comprehensive retrospective invites visitors to rediscover Capa's enduring legacy and his powerful, humanistic perspective on history.
