This exhibition presents the first institutional solo show in Spain by Argentinian artist Mariela Scafati, focusing on her expanded painting practice. The show explores how canvases, textiles, and words can project subjectivity, creating a world that recomposes from conversation to specific memory, from object to body, and from abstract to concrete language.
Mariela Scafati's practice transcends traditional canvas use, transforming its surface and materiality into a space for collective subjectivity. Her expanded paintings become sculptures and installations, utilizing both their substance and language to project identity. This exhibition, her first solo institutional show in Spain, proposes a recomposed world, moving from conversation to memory, object to body, and canvas to clothing. It expands from the chromatic to the multiple, from the abstract to concrete words, and from everyday objects to imaginative camouflage, exploring past traumas and colorful futures.
The exhibition features key pieces like the new sculptures "Dai, Devo, Estela, Guille, Lola, Magui, Manu, y Nico" (2026), "Familia (Daniel, Kinga y Maite)" (2019), and "Polleras" (skirts in Argentina). These works create a universe of possibilities through naming, where the limits of language define the world. Each body-canvas is adorned with clothing from friends, imbued with their thoughts and projected futures painted as phrases, turning them into tangible, personal friends with their own narratives. The series of skirts, "Polleras," are deconstructed, showing their seams and interlinings, adorned with painted phrases that move the artist. Scafati's practice, which includes activism, is enriched by an audio from Radio Eléctrica Artesanal, in collaboration with Lola Granillo, giving voice to the sculptures. The exhibition also includes later works like "Libro y deseo" (2025), "Para saborear" (2025), "Respira" (2025), and "Cuatro" (2025), using materials like rope, acrylic canvas, and furniture, breaking down the boundaries between objects and their functions.
