Exhibition summary

This exhibition at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano features the work of contemporary figurative artist Íñigo Navarro. It draws parallels between Navarro's large-format canvases and the museum's collection, particularly referencing Goya's 'Modo de volar', as a tribute to painting and its relevance today.

Curatorial context

Íñigo Navarro, described as one of the most sought-after figurative artists internationally, presents his first institutional exhibition in Spain at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano. Titled "Ayer pisó tu sombra un tigre" (Yesterday a tiger stepped on your shadow), the exhibition is a homage to painting, exploring its lasting relevance by drawing connections between Navarro's large-format canvases and the works of old masters in the museum's collection, notably Francisco de Goya's print 'Modo de volar'. Navarro's style, influenced by European figurative painters like Michaël Borremans and Neo Rauch, combines elements of historical scenes with everyday life, magic realism, and a reduced palette, drawing inspiration from the Spanish Golden Age and contemporary film, music, and philosophy. The exhibition also features a specially created fragrance inspired by the themes of nature and elevation, designed by perfumer Valérie Aucouturier. Navarro seeks to create a 'new' figurative art with dreamlike atmospheres where beauty coexists with humor and melancholy, using masks as a recurring motif to universalize figures. Central to the exhibition is a sculpture titled 'Lady Jetlag' by Marcos Luengo, in collaboration with Navarro, related to his painting 'Si vuelo, mi reflejo se hunde', further exploring the theme of flight initiated by Goya's work and aiming to return figurative painting to its institutional significance.
