Curatorial context
The exhibition "A MAR. A PESAR DE LA AUSENCIA" by Mayte Vieta presents a series of artworks, including photographs (some previously unseen), light boxes, serigraphed mirrors, and sculptures, thoughtfully displayed across the gallery, portico, and guest art room of the Museo Lázaro Galdiano. Conceived as a dialogue with the museum's collection, the exhibition uses the sea as its central axis, immersing the viewer in reflections on connection, care, and our modes of relating to the world, exploring the coexistence of the ephemeral and the eternal.
Vieta's work, comprising around twenty pieces, some created specifically for this show, interweaves with the museum's collection to question the viewer's perception of time and existence. The exhibition features sculptures from series like 'Cuerpos de luz' and 'Preludio,' alongside photographs from 'La Nada' and 'Comme j’aime que tu existes.' These works, often presented as light boxes and interacting with serigraphed mirrors, aim to create a sense of lightness, infinity, and suspension, challenging spatial perception. Vieta explains that the concept of 'ephemeral' becomes a metaphor for the duality between what manifests and disappears, and what endures. The exhibition, curated by Natàlia Chocarro, delves into a cosmic silence linked to deep internal experience, using the sea as a metaphor for what surpasses human scale, highlighting human insignificance against an ambivalent nature.
