GALÁCTICA is a large-scale exhibition featuring a giant mosaic of the Milky Way, created from high-quality images captured in locations known for their exceptional dark skies like the Teide Observatory and Namibia. The exhibition aims to showcase the beauty of the cosmos and inspire scientific curiosity.
The 'GALÁCTICA' exhibition presents an immense mosaic of the Milky Way, made possible by the use of high-quality digital cameras, telephoto lenses, and the exceptionally clear and dark night skies of Tenerife's Teide Observatory and Namibia. This ambitious project, led by Miquel Serra-Ricart of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) in collaboration with the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT), involved approximately 80 nights of observation over 10 months, totaling over 300 hours to capture the panoramic view and an additional 80 hours for individual objects within the "galactic fauna" catalog.
The exhibition features a substantial module, measuring 4 meters, designed to be accessible and engaging for the general public and the educational community, with the hope of fostering new scientific vocations. The captured images provide extraordinary detail, particularly the Great Magellanic Cloud, highlighting the exceptional darkness and transparency of the chosen sites. The technical process involved using a full-frame DSLR camera with a fast telephoto lens, alongside a modified CCD camera with narrow-band filters for high-resolution observation of specific celestial objects, all mounted on a robotic telescope system to compensate for Earth's rotation.
