Curatorial context

The Museo Geominero at the Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME) is now exhibiting the 'Retuerta del Bullaque', a significant metallic meteorite discovered near Retuerta del Bullaque in Ciudad Real. This specimen, weighing 100 kg, was initially mistaken for scrap and used for domestic purposes before its true nature was recognized by scientists. Scientific analysis has classified the meteorite as a coarse octahedrite from the IAB siderite group, characterized by complex iron-nickel alloys forming Widmanstätten figures. Researchers Rafael P. Lozano and Jesús Reyes from IGME conducted the mineralogical and geochemical study. This discovery marks the fourth siderite found in Spain and the 29th confirmed meteorite for the country. A fragment for study, along with a replica of the original, is now on display at the Museo Geominero in Madrid.
