Curatorial context

The Educational Garden of the Mediterranean Forest is designed for visitor enjoyment and education, showcasing the plant diversity of Madrid and surrounding peninsular regions. The garden is thoughtfully segmented into distinct areas: the mountain, characterized by its pronounced slopes; the steppe hills, featuring the region's native gypsums; and a transition area. Visitors can traverse pathways to discover species thriving in each specific ecosystem. Within the garden, five key modules recreate various Mediterranean Forest ecosystems. These include 'The Rock Garden,' showcasing plants from different rock types; 'The Gypsums,' highlighting species like Vella Spinosa and catnip; 'The Limestones,' home to calcicole plants; 'The Transition Area,' presenting specimens from holm oak and cork oak forests; and 'The Mountain Area,' located on the highest terrain and featuring Piornal and black pine. The garden also hosts a collection of long-established exotic trees and bushes from various continents, such as Atlas cedar, Japanese pagoda tree, ginkgo, and various palms, serving as representatives of global flora. This space, made possible by the patronage of the Díaz-Bastien and Sánchez-Amillátegui family and the Solventia Foundation, is utilized by the MNCN for educational programs that illuminate the richness of the Mediterranean Forest. A didactic guide is available in the Museum shop for further exploration.
