Exhibition summary

This macrophotography exhibition showcases common insects found in urban environments, primarily from the Iberian Peninsula. Through highly detailed photocompositions, the project aims to bring these often-unseen neighbours closer to the public, allowing viewers to observe them in extraordinary detail and fostering a new perspective on our relationship with these small creatures.

Curatorial context

"Insects up close. Urban neighbours" is a macrophotography exhibition that brings the often-unseen common species found in urban environments into sharp focus. Primarily featuring insects from the Iberian Peninsula, the project uses advanced photocomposition techniques to enlarge hundreds of photomicrographs, presenting familiar species with extraordinary detail. This approach aims to shift the viewer's perspective from looking down on these arthropods to meeting them face to face, overcoming the barrier of size and fostering a deeper appreciation for our smallest urban neighbours. The exhibition is the work of Máher Fahim Fernández, a biologist and professional photographer with a background in biodiversity and scientific imaging. The project was conceived from the need to digitize and preserve museum invertebrate collections, which can lose their original colours and details over time. Fernández's technique involves creating photocompositions from hundreds or thousands of individual photographs, ensuring that the entire specimen remains in focus even at extreme enlargements. Each animal is meticulously lit using customized lighting schemes tailored to its specific texture, volume, and colours, highlighting specific structures and enhancing details in ways rarely observed in natural settings. This scientific and artistic approach aims to add majesty to the specimens, enhancing science communication and revealing the often-overlooked beauty and complexity of urban insect life.
