Curatorial context

The Museo Nacional del Romanticismo presents 'Barbara Morgan: gesto, danza y expresionismo,' an exhibition dedicated to the influential American artist Barbara Morgan. The show synthesizes her career through her photographs of contemporary dance in the 1930s and 40s, as well as her more experimental work in photomontages and light drawings within the realm of Action Photography. This exhibition aims to bring greater visibility to Morgan, a significant innovator in photography whose work has historically had less exposure in Europe. Curated by Pia Ogea and based on the Colección Astudillo, the exhibition is organized into six sections that explore Morgan's interest in kinetics, movement, and the use of the body as an expressive medium. Key highlights include her dance photography, particularly her relationship with choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, with works like 'Letter to the World. The Kick' and 'Lamentation.' The exhibition also delves into her social commentary, exemplified by 'Deep Song,' which addresses the Spanish Civil War, and her complex, multifaceted representations of reality through photomontages. Barbara Morgan (1900-1992) was a pivotal figure in establishing photography as an artistic technique, holding her own exhibition at MoMA in 1945 and co-founding Aperture magazine in 1952. Her work was influenced by European artists in the US during WWII and, in turn, became a crucial reference for Abstract Expressionism.
