Exhibition summary

This exhibition at the Museo del Romanticismo showcases the photography of Swiss artist Karlheinz Weinberger, featuring his portraits of rebellious youth in post-war Zurich. The show, curated by Alberto García-Alix as part of PHotoEspaña, highlights Weinberger's passion for photography, which he pursued in his free time while working as a warehouseman.

Curatorial context

The Museo del Romanticismo presents 'KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER. EN UN CÍRCULO DE REBELDES', an exhibition dedicated to the photographic work of Swiss artist Karlheinz Weinberger (1921-2006). This marks the first time Weinberger's photography is shown in Spain. A warehouseman by profession, Weinberger dedicated his free time to photography, beginning in his adolescence. In the 1940s, he joined the underground gay club Der Kreis, publishing his work under the pseudonym 'Jim' in the magazine of the same name. From the late 1950s, Weinberger captured images of young rebels in Switzerland who challenged traditional gender roles by customizing their clothing. His subjects, often referred to as 'bikers, rockers, and chaperos', sported customized denim jackets, large belts, and handmade medallions, defining a counter-culture youth in Zurich eager to break from Swiss conformity. The exhibition features approximately twenty of these works, offering a surprising portrait of a non-conformist Switzerland and a generation seeking identity. This exhibition is curated by Alberto García-Alix and is part of the 'Carta Blanca' section of the 20th anniversary of PHotoEspaña.
