The Museo del Romanticismo presents 'La Doña Inés soñada por Zorrilla,' an invited artwork exhibition celebrating the bicentenary of Zorrilla's birth. It features Raimundo de Madrazo's 1891 painting of the actress María Guerrero as Doña Inés, a character from Zorrilla's iconic play 'Don Juan Tenorio.' This exhibition highlights the enduring legacy of the play and its characters.
The Museo del Romanticismo commemorates the bicentenary of José Zorrilla's birth by exhibiting the painting 'La actriz María Guerrero, como “Doña Inés"' (1891) by Raimundo de Madrazo. This significant artwork, on loan from the Museo Nacional del Prado, will be displayed in the museum's galleries until January 28, 2018. The exhibition centers on the profound impact of Zorrilla's 'Don Juan Tenorio,' a cornerstone of Spanish Romantic literature, and the iconic portrayal of Doña Inés by María Guerrero.
Guerrero, at just twenty-four years old, famously embodied Doña Inés, a role that became one of her most successful. Zorrilla himself exclaimed that Guerrero was the 'Doña Inés' he had dreamed of. Raimundo de Madrazo, a highly sought-after portraitist of his time, masterfully captured Guerrero in character, blending his own artistic prowess with the tradition of Spanish Golden Age portraiture. Although neither the painter nor the actress belong to the Romantic period, the painting serves as a testament to the lasting fame of Zorrilla's work and characters. This exhibition continues the museum's tradition, started in 2012, of hosting 'Invited Works' to contextualize its collection with pieces from other institutions.
