The Museo Nacional del Romanticismo presents 'Por una sonrisa un mundo. Caricatura, sátira y humor en el Romanticismo,' an exhibition delving into the nature of humor during the 19th century and its mediums of diffusion. The display evokes decimonthly publications, featuring works from the museum's historical press collection alongside loans from the Biblioteca Nacional de España, such as Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer's 'Lady Macbeth' and watercolors from 'Los Borbones en pelota.' The exhibition examines caricature as a political weapon used to ridicule monarchs and rulers, noting the censorship faced by satirical press and the rise of caricature following the Glorious Revolution of 1868. It also addresses social critique, illustrating how everyday life, fashion, and advancements were subjects of mockery, and highlights the often misogynistic portrayal of women in social satire. The show further touches upon the ridicule of Romantic stereotypes and their own mockery of classicism, featuring works by artists like Federico de Madrazo, Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer, Francisco Lameyer, Leonardo Alenza, and Francisco Ortego. The concept of 'collecting smiles' is explored through caricatures of famous figures and optical devices like magic lantern plates, connecting 19th-century visual culture to the origins of cinema.
