Curatorial context

The Museo Nacional del Romanticismo has organized the first monographic exhibition dedicated to Rafael Tegeo (1798-1856), a fundamental artist in the Spanish art scene of the first half of the 19th century and a key figure in introducing Romantic sensibility to Spanish painting. This exhibition seeks to rescue Tegeo from a period of obscurity and inadequate study, despite his importance. Featuring around thirty works loaned from institutions such as Patrimonio Nacional, the Museo Nacional del Prado, and the Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, the exhibition aims to reconstruct the life and work of this singular artist. The museum's recent acquisition of 'Virgen del Jilguero' and the donation of a pair of portraits of Jacinto Galaup and María del Pilar Ordeig have further fueled this rediscovery. The exhibition's content explores Tegeo's formative years, his influential stay in Rome, his role as a court painter for Queen Isabella II, and his notable achievements in historical painting and portraiture, a genre in which he gained considerable fame among the Spanish Romantic bourgeoisie.
