Corpus Christi College Lecturer Dr Louise Upton Sworn In as Lord Mayor of Oxford
Visitors exploring historic academic institutions will find a fresh connection to local civic life following a recent appointment at Corpus Christi College. Dr Louise Upton, a Lecturer in Neuroscience at the college, has officially taken office as the Lord Mayor of Oxford.
The ceremonial transition took place at a traditional mayor-making event held at Oxford Town Hall on May 15, 2025.
Academic Background and Local Engagement
Dr Upton's path to the role combines a scientific career with extensive community involvement. After completing her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at New College and earning a PhD in Cell Physiology from University College London, she spent several years conducting neuroscience research in Paris. She later returned to Oxford, spending twenty-five years in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG).
Alongside leading the Neurophysiology core facility for a major Wellcome Trust-backed project, her scientific work has focused on brain development and autoimmune conditions. While her time in research decreased following her appointment as a Cabinet Member on the City Council, she maintains an active academic presence by teaching psychology and medical students.
What the Lord Mayor's Role Entails in the Community
As Lord Mayor, Dr Upton steps into a largely ceremonial position that requires fulfilling more than three hundred engagements annually. The role involves representing the council at high-profile civic gatherings, including Royal visits and the annual Remembrance Sunday service, alongside attending grassroots community meetings and charity functions.
Beyond ceremonial duties, the Lord Mayor focuses heavily on championing local voluntary organizations, promoting municipal initiatives, and supporting specific charitable causes. For the 2025 and 2026 term, Dr Upton has selected The Gatehouse, OXSRAD, and TRAX as her official charitable beneficiaries.
