Corpus Christi College Oxford Celebrates Spencer Building Grand Opening and Passivhaus Accreditation
Corpus Christi College recently marked a major milestone with the grand opening of the Spencer Building, an event highlighted by the announcement of its official Passivhaus accreditation. Chancellor Lord Hague of Richmond revealed the certification during the celebratory gathering on Saturday, September 20, addressing donors and supporters before cutting the ribbon.
Sustainable Design Meets Historic Heritage in Oxford
The new facility serves as a secure home for the College's Special Collections, balancing environmental stewardship with the preservation of historic archives. Achieving Passivhaus certification represents a significant engineering achievement, particularly within a Grade I listed site. Few libraries in the United Kingdom—and among the first within the University of Oxford network—have reached this rigorous standard.
The structure is engineered to reduce energy demand significantly, utilizing high-performance insulation, triple-glazed windows, rooftop photovoltaic panels, and the thermal mass of adjacent stonework to maintain a stable environment for sensitive archival materials. Beyond its environmental credentials, the building introduces disabled access to the medieval library for the first time, expanding scholarly utility across the campus.
Highlights from the Grand Opening Event
Alongside the opening ceremonies and the Passivhaus announcement, the afternoon featured the unveiling of a portrait of Lord Spencer, painted by renowned British artist Jonathan Yeo. The President of the College noted that the project fulfills a long-standing goal to improve facilities for special collections, enhance spaces for student study, and support future generations of researchers.
