Visitors and scholars connected to Corpus Christi College can celebrate a major academic achievement following the announcement that former President and Honorary Fellow Professor Richard Carwardine has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize. Presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the accolade honors the book that most significantly advances public understanding of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War era.

Professor Carwardine earned the recognition for his acclaimed work, Righteous Strife: How Warring Religious Nationalists Forged Lincoln’s Union. The study explores the American Civil War through the lens of competing religious nationalisms and faith-driven politics, shedding new light on how Abraham Lincoln navigated these deep ideological divides while striving to reunite the nation.
Having served as President of the College from 2010 to 2017 before being elected an Honorary Fellow, Professor Carwardine has built a distinguished career as a leading historian of nineteenth-century American politics and religion. His extensive list of honors includes fellowship in the British Academy, a companion of the Order of St Michael and St George, the Order of Lincoln from the State of Illinois, and the Lincoln Forum's Richard Nelson Current Award of Achievement.
