Exhibition summary
This exhibition delves into the Polish fascination with castles, exploring the concept of 'zamczystość' (castleness) as a cultural perception rather than strict architectural reality. It examines how this archetype, rooted in the 19th century, influences contemporary castles and national symbols like Wawel and the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
Curatorial context
The exhibition "Ostatni zamek. Zamczystość polska: od Wawelu do Stobnicy" investigates the persistent construction and reconstruction of castles in Poland, a phenomenon that continues despite criticism and high costs. It examines the castle not just as an architectural typology but as a powerful symbol, exploring the cultural perception of 'zamczystość' – how we collectively imagine and interpret castles, irrespective of their historical accuracy.
The exhibition traces the origins of this contemporary perception of castles back to the 19th century, demonstrating how this language of castleness, encompassing scale, architectural style, and preservation choices, continues to shape our understanding of even major national symbols like Wawel and the Royal Castle in Warsaw. It features contemporary photography by artists such as Nicolas Grospierre, who juxtaposes iconic castles, and Marta Ejsmont, focusing on the materiality of both old and new fortifications. The exhibition is complemented by architectural models, infographics, and children's drawings. A culminating installation, "Ostatni zamek," by the Turnus collective and Mariia Kolomiitseva, critically deconstructs the archetype of the castle by reducing it to its recognizable form while stripping it of its traditional attributes of monumentality and symbolic weight.
