Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores a forgotten episode in the history of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, focusing on luxurious apartments designed for foreign VIP guests of the PRL authorities that were never completed. Visitors can discover the clashing visions for the castle's future during its reconstruction, as well as view original period furnishings and previously unpublished photographs by Chris Niedenthal.

Curatorial context

In the 1970s, as the Royal Castle in Warsaw rose from the ruins of war to become a symbol of national heritage, a secret project was underway to dedicate a portion of its interiors to exclusive, luxurious apartments for foreign dignitaries visiting the Polish People's Republic. Complete with banquet halls, marble bathrooms, and modern amenities, this hidden vision stood in stark contrast to the efforts of professors Stanisław Lorentz, Jan Zachwatowicz, and Aleksander Gieysztor to restore the castle as a public museum for all Polish citizens. Ultimately, as economic and political crises mounted, the project was abandoned before any VIPs ever stayed in the apartments. This exhibition reconstructs that aborted project, bringing together original furniture, textiles, glass, and decorative items that were sourced for these never-used spaces. In addition to these historical artifacts, the exhibition features a series of previously unpublished photographs by renowned photojournalist Chris Niedenthal, which document the intense, human-filled process of rebuilding the castle in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Together, these elements offer a unique look at the conflicting ideologies of the era and the history of a building that almost served two masters.
