En suspensión/Suspended is an installation of blown glass exploring themes of time, materiality, and transformation. Created during a residency at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vidrio de Alcorcón (MAVA), it captures moments of glass forming and reflects on natural temporal processes.
En suspensión/Suspended is an installation of blown glass, modeled by breath, heat, gravity, and time, created during a residency at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vidrio de Alcorcón (MAVA). The artwork embodies atmosphere within its structure, capturing the fleeting moments when molten silica expands, stretches, and cools.
The forms hover in delicate balance, interconnected as if sharing a single breath, activating the space between object and body and creating an invisible tension. Light and shadow extend the work into its surroundings, projecting beyond its physical matter to accentuate movement, scale, and weight. The installation reflects on time not just as a physical force but as a fundamental condition of creation. Each piece embodies its own duration—the precise intervals for heating, softening, expanding, and stabilizing glass; the ephemeral yet decisive instant of breath that shapes it; the gradual cooling that fixes its final state. These processes resonate with other natural temporalities, such as the slow, collective work of bees producing honey, transforming fluidity into density and transparency into opacity.
This work invites contemplation of presence, emphasizing time as lived rather than measured. Working with glass demands immersion in unhurseable processes, where the material itself guides decisions. The resulting forms emerge with a sense of inevitability, akin to the apparent simplicity of honey, whose complexity lies in its making. Glass and honey share an affinity: both transition between liquid and solid states, capture and refract light, and reveal or conceal through transparency. In their fluid state, they suggest movement; once stabilized, they contain time, preserving traces of their passage. This installation dialogues with these parallels, offering a material meditation on transformation, duration, and the silent, constant evolution of life through time. The borosilicate glass pieces were realized with the technical precision and material knowledge of renowned scientific glassblower Emilio Elvira and his team.
