Exhibition summary

This exhibition, the ninth in the Kora program, focuses on the work of Irma Álvarez-Laviada, presenting over thirty pieces from the last decade. The exhibition delves into her reflections on inclusion and exclusion within Western art tradition, exploring the space between the 'frame' and its boundaries.

Curatorial context

Within the framework of the Kora program, curated by Rocío de la Villa, _Dentro y fuera del marco_ (Inside and Outside the Frame) highlights the work of Irma Álvarez-Laviada (Gijón, 1978). The exhibition features more than thirty pieces created over the past decade, alongside paintings from the museum's collection. Álvarez-Laviada's creations occupy an intermediate space, operating both within and outside the conventional artistic frame. She utilizes industrial materials, typically designed for practical purposes, to reflect on inclusions and exclusions within the Western modern art tradition, specifically questioning the boundaries between the pure and the decorative, and between aesthetic experience and economic or ideological interests in art. Her work approaches geometric abstraction from a gender perspective. Stereotypical attributes of masculinity and femininity—such as the vertical and horizontal, the hard and the soft, the essential and the subsidiary, the full and the empty—are deconstructed and questioned in pieces that dialogue with tradition. This deconstruction is achieved through creative processes governed by repetition and the subtle differences within it. The exhibition is located in the Postpop Rooms on the first floor of the museum.
