Curatorial context

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, in collaboration with TBA21, presents 'Cautín', the first European solo exhibition by trans Mapuche artist Seba Calfuqueo. The exhibition showcases new works commissioned by TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, inspired by the Cautín River, a significant waterway in the Araucanía region that has witnessed episodes of colonization and Mapuche resistance. The river, depicted as a living entity, shapes Calfuqueo's art, revealing the traces of its journey and embodying the tension between colonial forces and the enduring Mapuche worldview that cherishes water as a source of life. Curated by Marina Avia Estrada, 'Cautín' prompts visitors to contemplate new ways of engaging with nature, fostering a sense of reciprocity, recognition, and coexistence among waters, humans, non-human beings, and the mythical creatures that inhabit them. The exhibition invites a reimagining of our relationship with the natural world, drawing on indigenous perspectives and historical narratives.
