Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the profound and lifelong relationship between Salvador Dalí's visual aesthetic and the writings of Sigmund Freud. It traces Dalí's fascination from his early exposure to Freud's work to his eventual meeting with the psychoanalyst, examining how Freudian thought shaped his art throughout his career.

Curatorial context

The exhibition "The Freudian Universe of Dalí" delves into the complex interplay between Salvador Dalí's distinctive artistic vision and the foundational ideas of Sigmund Freud. The relationship, which began in the early 1920s when Dalí first encountered Freud's translated works, evolved into a significant, almost obsessive, influence on his art, particularly after his move towards Surrealism from 1926 onwards. Dalí's development of his "paranoiac-critical method" was directly inspired by Freud's theories, marking a crucial contribution to the Surrealist movement. The exhibition, curated by Jaime Brihuega, proposes a comprehensive rereading of Dalí's prolific output, guided by his fascination with Freud and their notable meeting in London in 1938. Structured into seven chronological sections, the exhibition highlights key moments in Dalí's life and artistic development, linking them to Freudian concepts. Complementing Dalí's works are paintings and drawings by a diverse range of artists including Jean Arp, Arnold Böcklin, Max Ernst, Jean-François Millet, Pablo Picasso, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Julio Romero de Torres, Gino Severini, and Yves Tanguy, offering a broader context for Dalí's exploration of the subconscious and his engagement with the intellectual currents of his time.
