Curatorial context

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, in collaboration with the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), presents "Gaza, where life endures." This exhibition features the work of a Gazan photographer from UNRWA's team in the Strip, who has chosen to remain anonymous for security reasons. This circumstance underscores the context in which the images were taken and the value of this visual testimony. The exhibition brings together ten contemporary portraits of Palestinian children, women, and men who have survived the Israeli offensive. Each portrait is accompanied by images of personal objects, forming an inseparable composition between subject and object. This pairing emphasizes how everyday items acquire extraordinary meaning in a context of devastation. Examples include Mu’ayyad's ball, symbolizing the desire for normality amidst destruction; Malak's shoes, bearing witness to repeated forced displacements; and Mahmoud's tarp, a symbol of extreme precariousness and the capacity for adaptation in the face of losing one's home. With over two and a half years of Israeli offensive, 2.1 million Palestinians are enduring a severe humanitarian crisis marked by scarcity and persistent violence. UNRWA plays a crucial role as the main humanitarian actor in Gaza, providing essential services in health, education, and social assistance to hundreds of thousands of people. This exhibition offers a glimpse into daily life in Gaza through the faces of its inhabitants, who demonstrate remarkable resilience while aspiring to live with dignity and build a future filled with opportunities. The exhibition is part of the 'Cultura Viva X Palestina y UNRWA' program, an initiative by UNRWA Spain to support Palestine through culture.
