Ernest Cole: Photographer in Exile – Powerful Photography Exhibition at the National Museum of Ethnography in Warsaw

Ernest Cole (1940–1990) was one of the first Black independent photographers from South Africa and collaborated with publications like Drum and The New York Times. After fleeing South Africa in 1966, the apartheid regime revoked his passport, permanently barring him from his homeland. In the US, he focused on street photography and later collaborated with the Tiofoto collective in Sweden from 1969–1971. Cole ceased photography in 1972, experiencing periods of homelessness. Negatives from his American period were thought lost for over four decades until over 60,000 were discovered in 2017. In 2024, Aperture published his photographs in the album 'The True America', documenting Black life in the late 60s and early 70s. Cole did not portray his subjects as passive victims; instead, his photographs highlight their strength and agency in the fight for their rights. These images are a testament to the birth of collective identity and the power of movements like Black Pride and Black Power. The exhibition intertwines narratives of oppression with depictions of everyday life in the USA. This exhibition is part of the National Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw's 2025 program, 'Against Stereotypes', addressing themes of social exclusion, racial prejudice, and affirming Black communities and cultures, their pride, and strength.
