Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Moje wybory. Aleksandra Piłsudska' (My Choices. Aleksandra Piłsudska) delves into the life of a resilient, unconventional, and courageous woman, also known for her sensitivity and care. Aleksandra Piłsudska navigated numerous life choices, some controversial, within restrictive periods of foreign partitions, political oppression, underground activism, war, and subsequent exile. The exhibition showcases over twenty artistic and modern representations of her at various life stages, illustrated by her personal statements, complemented by historical panels that discuss key aspects of her biography and are enriched with extensive iconography. Historically, Aleksandra was involved in the independence movement with the Polish Socialist Party during the 1905 Revolution, managed arms transport and storage for the Combat Organization of the PPS, and met Józef Piłsudski. She participated in preparations for the Bezdanys raid and served as the head of intelligence for the Polish Legions during World War I. Her activism extended to the League of Women for War Readiness and the Polish Military Organization, leading to two imprisonments. Following her marriage to Józef Piłsudski in 1921, she engaged in civic and charitable work, initiating the recording of memoirs from women involved in the fight for independence. She was recognized with honors including the Silver Cross of the Order of Virtuti Militari. After her husband's death, she became the guardian of his memory and continued her efforts for Poland's independence and the preservation of Piłsudski's legacy in exile in Great Britain. Despite her significant contributions, she is often solely remembered as Józef Piłsudski's wife, yet she forged her own path, remaining true to the ideals of independence.
