Curatorial context
The exhibition 'Praga lat 70. Fotografie Alberta Krystyniaka' presents a collection of dozens of black and white photographs that document the Praga district of Warsaw during the 1970s, a period marked by slow rebuilding and significant transformations that continue to shape the area today. Albert Krystyniak, who grew up in a tenement house on Ząbkowska Street, approached his work reporterially, capturing the authentic and often intimate image of the district's life. The photographs highlight architectural details, the effects of time on buildings, and the everyday reality of residents. Subjects include areas like Port Praski, Ząbkowska Street, and Nowa Praga, with a focus on facades showing plaster decay, damaged details, and remnants of balconies. The cycle also features newly built blocks of flats, often juxtaposed with views of demolished or still-inhabited older buildings.
The exhibition is enriched with archival materials, including press clippings about housing estate constructions and plans for rebuilding the district's center. Albert Krystyniak (1939) is described as an artist, ceramist, photographer, and educator, with a law degree, who was associated with the photographic group 'Fakt'. He lived in Warsaw and returned to Praga multiple times between 1973 and 1976 to photograph its architecture and community. The exhibition narrative is further supplemented by a publication titled 'Praga lat 70. Fotografie Alberta Krystyniaka' and an episode of the podcast 'Praskie Audiohistorie'.
