This exhibition showcases drawings and paintings by Józef Czapski, a painter, writer, and witness to 20th-century events. Featuring works from the MAW collection spanning over fifty years, the exhibition explores the theme of 'L'Humanité / Ludzkość' through Czapski's sensitive portrayal of humanity.
The exhibition "Józef Czapski – L’Humanité / Ludzkość" presents a significant collection of drawings and paintings by the artist, writer, and witness to pivotal 20th-century events. Sourced from the MAW's own collection, the exhibition covers more than half a century of Czapski's artistic output, including ink and pencil drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings. The central theme, encapsulated by the title "L’Humanité / Ludzkość" (Humanity), reflects Czapski's lifelong dedication to portraying the human figure. His work, shaped by experiences in Soviet POW camps where he began sketching fellow prisoners, offers an honest and unidealized look at anonymous passersby, men at tables, and public figures from post-war France. The collection of works, created over decades, forms a collective and sincere portrait of the human collective.
Curated by Piotr Bernatowicz, the exhibition is part of the Józef Czapski Year observances. Accompanying events include curatorial guided tours and lectures that delve deeper into Czapski's life and work, such as his political entanglements and his role as a painter, writer, and soldier of the Anders Army. The exhibition is integrated into the museum's permanent exhibition and requires a museum ticket for entry.
