Exhibition summary

This exhibition delves into the universal experiences of vulnerability, shame, and the search for meaning in today's chaotic world, resonating with both teenagers and adults. It explores how modern art addresses the challenges of transitioning from childhood to adulthood, and how artistic tools can foster relationships and alternative communication in an era overwhelmed by images and information.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Adolescence' presents a universal narrative about vulnerability, shame, and the search for meaning amidst today's chaotic world, aiming to connect with both teenage and adult audiences. It investigates how contemporary art depicts the transition from childhood to adulthood and the issues faced by today's teenagers. The works explore whether artistic tools can assist in building relationships, creating alternative communication methods, and offering support during emotional crises in a reality saturated with images and information. A common thread in the videos, installations, and other artworks is the experience of adolescence shaped by contemporary challenges, including the proximity of ongoing conflicts, climate change exacerbating future uncertainty, systemic and peer violence contributing to mental health crises, and the overwhelming influx of images, fake news, and social media pressures. Artists like Matt Copson, Gisèle Vienne, and Mohamed Bourouissa examine the anxieties and struggles associated with this period, including accepting one's body, navigating sexual identity, and coping with loneliness and withdrawal. They also highlight systemic violence and the political potential of marginalized youth. The exhibition also touches upon cyberbullying, political manipulation through social media, and the creative use of digital tools. The core inquiry of the exhibition revolves around the role of cultural institutions and artistic practices in offering tangible support to teenagers amidst a significant mental health crisis affecting this demographic. The exhibition aims to create a space for amplifying young voices, showcasing works created collectively in collaboration with artists. Notable contributions include an installation by Dasha Chechushkova featuring works by young individuals from the Ukrainian 'fra fra fra' collective. The exhibition is conceived as an experimental environment that encourages the discovery of film, poetry, performative actions, and theatrical practices to enhance critical thinking, social awareness, and emotional resilience, treating adolescence not just as an age but as a state of mind.
