Exhibition summary

This exhibition by Krzysztof Gil delves into the contemporary understanding of the ghetto, moving beyond physical confines to explore sociological concepts of exclusion, marginalization, and restricted rights, particularly concerning migrants. It draws parallels between historical ghettos, refugee camps, and modern urban phenomena like gated communities and social housing estates.

Curatorial context

Krzysztof Gil's exhibition, "Nobody wants you here," addresses the complex and evolving concept of the ghetto in its contemporary sociological sense. Historically understood as physically segregated urban areas, the 'ghetto' today often refers to marginalized districts in metropolises where excluded groups face adverse living conditions and limited access to resources. The exhibition draws parallels between these modern conditions and phenomena such as refugee and displaced persons camps, or state-controlled centers for foreigners. Gil's work is inspired by Ece Temelkuran's "Nation of Strangers" and his own experiences growing up in a housing estate established under government orders, which led to the ghettoisation of the Roma people. His dual Polish and Roma identity serves as a critical lens, enabling him to analyze ghettoization as a persistent mechanism across different scales and eras. The artist is particularly interested in the 'ghetto of the imagination,' which he believes is constructed at the level of imagery, narratives, and stereotypes. By shaping this visual landscape, Gil aims to challenge perceptions of marginalized groups and dismantle clichés, thereby influencing how 'Strangers' are viewed and disarming the justifications for their exclusion.
