This exhibition celebrates 50 years of Spanish fashion by Elio Berhanyer, a seminal designer known for his geometric and architectural creations. The retrospective highlights his career, awards, and distinct style that has influenced Spanish haute couture and ready-to-wear.
The exhibition "Elio Berhanyer, 50 años de moda española" (Elio Berhanyer, 50 Years of Spanish Fashion) honors Elio Berhanyer, a preeminent figure in Spanish fashion design, often considered the most important of his century after Balenciaga. Born in Córdoba in 1929, Berhanyer, largely self-taught, developed a unique style characterized by geometric lines and solid, architectural volumes, particularly evident in his "day" creations. His "night" wear also featured distinctive elements like large, flat buttons and reinterpretations of historical Spanish painting.
Berhanyer opened his couture house in Madrid in 1960 and achieved significant success both domestically and internationally until 1978. He was an early adopter of branding, applying his name to ready-to-wear, accessories, and perfumes. Since 1978, he has continued to work in prêt-à-porter and has been a consistent presence at Pasarela Cibeles since 1994. The exhibition, supported by many of his loyal clients, delves into his biography and the evolution of his brand, showcasing his considerable legacy in fashion, theatre costumes, and commercial products.
