This exhibition explores the significant influence of Spanish culture, folklore, and art on international fashion designers. It features approximately fifty costumes by prominent 20th-century designers who drew inspiration from Spanish iconography.
“Genio y figura” is a popular Spanish expression signifying creative temperament and innate elegance. This exhibition aims to demonstrate the profound impact that "the Spanish" has had on the creations of the most renowned international designers. By presenting a selection of approximately fifty costumes from prominent 20th-century national and international designers, alongside the sources that inspired them—including popular attire, folklore, and artworks—the exhibition illustrates this significant relationship.
Throughout history, various elements of Spanish popular dress, such as the mantilla, torera, fan, and peineta, have made their mark on fashion. Currently, "the Spanish" aesthetic is once again a prominent trend globally. This exhibition delves into the symbiotic relationship between popular costume, art, iconography, and fashion, creating a dialogue that transcends clichés and reveals the essence of Spanish culture through the designers' interpretations. Curated by Manuel Outumuro, the exhibition was organized by the Subdirección General de Promoción de las Bellas Artes and produced by the Sociedad Estatal para Exposiciones Internacionales.
