Curatorial context
The exhibition "Iconos de indumentaria tradicional" delves into the Museum of Costume's rich collection of traditional attire, with a focus on garments and accessories dating mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. These pieces were initially gathered before 1925, marking a significant milestone in Spanish cultural history and forming the foundation of the current Museum of Costume.
The exhibition thoughtfully groups the numerous displayed costumes—encompassing work, daily, and ritual wear, with a particular emphasis on festive attire—into five distinct sections: 'Evolutions' (focusing on slow, primarily formal changes), 'Fiestas rituales' (celebrating attire associated with the festive calendar), 'Iconos de oficio' (highlighting costumes adapted to specific professions), 'Pervivencias e identidades' (showcasing coexisting silhouettes, chronologies, historical influences, and a mix of artisanal and industrial, natural and chemical dyeing), and 'Exaltación de la riqueza' (demonstrating the opulence in gala attire, linked to rites of passage and the life cycle, expressed through rich materials, decoration, and accumulation of garments and jewelry).
