Sombrealismo: Explore Surrealist Hats & Fashion at the Museum of Costume Exhibition

This exhibition, 'Sombrealismo. Sombreros en clave surrealista,' celebrates the patron saint of hatters with around thirty surrealist-inspired hats and headdresses. It explores the seductive power of hats and invites visitors into a dreamlike world of imagination, fantasy, and irony.

Launched to commemorate the fifth anniversary of St. Catherine of Alexandria's Day, the patron saint of hatters, 'Sombrealismo. Sombreros en clave surrealista' presents a collection of approximately thirty hats and headdresses inspired by the surrealist art movement. The exhibition aims to unlock the subconscious and highlight the seductive allure and inherent power of hats. Visitors will encounter imaginative creations such as a large peacock eye, ants crawling on a veil, birds taking flight, blue clouds with rain, and a giant mussel shell, among other elegant and bold proposals. These pieces, crafted with diverse techniques and materials, foster a dreamlike atmosphere where irony, reverie, and sarcasm meet imagination, fantasy, and ingenuity, underscoring the close relationship between fashion and art. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Spanish Hatters Association, with exhibition design by Susana Loureda and graphic design by Frédérique Bangerter. It offers a unique perspective on how headwear can transcend mere fashion accessories to become vehicles for artistic expression and conceptual exploration.
