Curatorial context

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, in collaboration with the TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation, presents "Calabash Nebula," the first solo exhibition in Spain by the interdisciplinary artist Tabita Rezaire. This exhibition brings together three new installations produced in 2024: "Omo Elu," "Des/astres," and "OMI: Yemoja Temple." "Omo Elu" was commissioned by the Lagos Biennial, while "Des/astres" and "OMI: Yemoja Temple" were co-produced by TBA21 with the Fondation Louis Vuitton and Schering Stiftung, respectively. Two of these works specifically address the orisha Yemoja, a central spirit in the Yoruba religion, revered as the mother of rivers and oceans and a symbol of life's origin and perpetuity. Rezaire herself describes her work as revolving around the "infinite, circular cycle of life." Rezaire, born in Paris in 1989, is recognized as an Afro-cyber-feminist artist and activist whose practice delves into the intersections of technology, arts, spirituality, decolonization, and healing. Utilizing video, performance art, and immersive spaces, she challenges dominant narratives and advocates for a holistic worldview where realities are interconnected. Her artistic process involves salvaging ancestral knowledge and practices, merging indigenous, African, and non-Western wisdom with digital technologies. Through this synthesis, Rezaire explores how spiritual and healing practices can serve as potent tools for resistance, emancipation, and the reconstruction of identities and communities. This exhibition aligns with the museum and TBA21's ongoing engagement with post-colonial societies, following previous projects like "Colonial Memory in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections" and Stephanie Comilang's "Search for Life."
