Curatorial context

Presented by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and TBA21, 'Pedagogies of War' features the work of Ukrainian artists Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk, exploring the pervasive impact of violence on human perception and collective experience. The exhibition posits war as an "operating system" that disciplines bodies, recalibrates attention, and subtly infiltrates the fabric of everyday life, particularly in an era of technologically mediated conflict. Working with audiovisual material, the artists demonstrate how daily rhythms and democratic structures fracture under violence and material pressure. The exhibition showcases four significant audiovisual works, including the commission 'Open World' (2025) and 'You Shouldn't Have to See This' (2024), alongside 'The Wanderer' (2022) from the TBA21 Collection, and a new commission for the museum, 'We Didn’t Start This War' (2026). Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk have been exploring Ukraine’s recent history and present since 2016, addressing enduring post-imperial power structures and their impact on a generation caught between historical trauma and an uncertain future.
