Exhibition summary

Terraphilia, a term combining 'Terra' (Earth) and 'philia' (love), explores humanity's deep connection and responsibility towards the Earth and its inhabitants through art. The exhibition uses around a hundred works from various collections to envision transformative ways of being in the world and rethink our place within the complex web of life.

Curatorial context

Organized in collaboration with TBA21–Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, _Terraphilia_ draws together approximately a hundred works spanning five centuries from the Thyssen-Bornemisza, Carmen Thyssen, and TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary collections. Featuring artists such as Joachim Patinir, Wassily Kandisnky, Natalia Goncharova, Dineo Seshee Bopape, Inês Zenha, Ayrson Heraclito, and Hervé Yamguen, the exhibition reveals the depth of more-than-human stories and multispecies imaginaries. It challenges anthropocentric and Western-centric perspectives, aligning with recent philosophical and ethical shifts that advocate for recognizing non-human life as integral participants in a planetary multitude. Structured across seven interlinked "scenarios," the exhibition guides visitors through diverse ways of engaging with the Earth—via myth, science, dreams, stories, spirituality, and ecology—while critically examining the histories of colonial expansion and ecological violence that have shaped the current planetary crisis. Daniela Zyman serves as the curator for _Terraphilia_. The exhibition's title itself signifies a profound commitment to affect, care, and responsibility toward the Earth, urging a reconsideration of humanity's role within the intricate tapestry of life. In an era marked by climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing inequalities, the exhibition mobilizes art to propose transformative perspectives and foster interspecies kinship and planetary care, inviting viewers to perceive the world as a pluriverse rather than a mere resource.
