Exhibition summary

This exhibition explores the intersection of fashion and pop music in 1980s Poland through the lens of six iconic female singers. Curated by Karolina Sulej, the exhibition highlights the vibrant, rebellious personas of these artists as they stood out against the grey social and political backdrop of the era.

Curatorial context

Melusines from the Blocks: Fashion and Pop in the 80s examines the careers of six celebrated Polish pop stars: Kora, Majka Jeżowska, Anna Jurksztowicz, Wanda Kwietniewska, Małgorzata Ostrowska, and Izabela Trojanowska. Through their unique visual identities and stage personas, these artists created a 'parallel, fairy-tale reality' that defied the ideological and aesthetic limitations of the era. The exhibition highlights how each singer meticulously crafted her image—from avant-garde and punk-inspired looks to elegant, bold fashion—serving as colorful beacons of emancipation and individual expression. Co-produced with the Museum of Polish Song in Opole, the exhibition invites visitors to go behind the scenes of these pop icons' stage images. It frames the 1980s not merely as a historical footnote but as a period of significant cultural transition, where music and lifestyle reflected a country caught between reality and a vision of a capitalist future. By exploring these 'phenomenal women,' the exhibition provides a lens into a transformative decade of Polish history.
